Students win top prizes in Young Crossrail competition

Youngsters who have won competitions featured in ‘The Link’, the quarterly newsletter published by Young Crossrail to more than 300,000 young people, collected their prizes on 6 July at a special awards presentation at Crossrail’s offices In Broadway, Victoria, London, SW1.

Douglas Oakervee OBE, Executive Chairman of Cross London Rail Links (CLRL), presented the lucky winners with Nintendo games consoles and portable DVD players in recognition for their efforts.

The competitions and presentation were arranged by CLRL, the company leading the Crossrail project to build a new rail line across London, from Maidenhead in the West to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East.

The initiative is part of Crossrail’s ongoing education programme.

The Link is distributed to schools along the route of the railway, from Maidenhead to Shenfield.

Saphina Mahud, aged 11, from North Woolwich, and Cain McCallam, aged 10, from Hayes, won a competition to design a Crossrail uniform.

They each receive a Nintendo DS games console for their winning efforts – beating over 250 other submissions.

Meanwhile, Ynes Benotemane, aged 11, from Barking and Sarah Browne, aged 9, from Romford, each won portable DVD players.
They took part in a Crossrail quiz and submitted suggestions about how Crossrail could benefit their local communities.

Ynes said that Crossrail could bring more people and businesses to the Barking area, while Sarah commented that the project could help provide transport links for the residents of Romford.

Ian Rathbone, manager of Crossrail’s education programme, comments: ‘Both competitions proved very popular and we are delighted with the feedback and entries we received. The young people have been very creative in their responses.

‘We provided the competitions through ‘The Link’ newsletter, which is distributed to schools within a mile of the proposed Crossrail route as part of Crossrail’s ongoing education programme.

This programme involves working with young people and communities living along the proposed route of the Crossrail line, and is a key part of our commitment to work with the community.’
