'Be aware, danger is everywhere' is one of the hard-hitting slogans that young people across London have used to demonstrate the seriousness of safety around construction sites.
As part of Crossrail’s ongoing programme of involving young people in the development of the railway, a competition was held asking students to design an A4, 2-sided leaflet to warn of construction site dangers.
Six primary and six secondary school students attended a special award ceremony to collect prizes for their winning entries for the competition featured in the Link Magazine, the quarterly newsletter of the Young Crossrail Education Programme. The ceremony was held on 5 June at the Cross London Rail Links (CLRL) offices in Victoria.
All the prizes were presented by CLRL’s Richard Morris. Managing Director, Delivery who said: ‘I am extremely impressed with both the high level of detailed knowledge and creativity demonstrated by all the twelve finalists.
‘Many areas of London will be affected during the construction phase of the railway and safety will be a major focus throughout the project. The safety of children, as indeed everyone, is of paramount importance to us.’
Fazia Mahmood, aged 8, from Newham and Farzana Islam, aged 14, from Tower Hamlets were chosen as overall winners of the competition.
Fazia’s entry was chosen for its clear, simple messages and use of safety signage whilst Farzana matched detailed use of information for relevant groups of the public with creative talent.
Fazia and Farzana won Nintendo Wiis for their leaflet designs and all 12 finalists received Crossrail goodie bags.
A different competition is featured in every edition of the 'The Link' newsletter which is delivered to 300,000 young people at schools along the route and is part of Crossrail’s ongoing education programme.
The programme, one of the first of its kind, involves working in partnership with over 700 local schools within one mile either side of the Crossrail route. Students take part in a range of curriculum based activities designed to help them acquire a better understanding of Crossrail whilst also being a part of their educational progress.
